Loughborough Magistrates Court

Loughborough Magistrates Court

In 2008 a new courthouse and surrounding landscape were completed in Loughborough for HMCS. SLR Consulting Ltd Landscape Team within the Nottingham and Leeds Offices worked as part of a large development and project team to design the landscape surrounding the proposed new Magistrates Court, including hard and soft works details from design development to on site completion. This was a particularly sensitive project posing many design constraints related to the prosecution service and the care of prisoners. The positioning and choice of materials and features had to be exact in order to meet set standards required by the ‘Court Standards and Design Guide 2004’ and the bespoke ‘BREEAM Assessment 2005’ for Loughborough Magistrates Court.

The scheme incorporates extensive areas of silver grey granite paving, broken by dark grey sett strips which compliment the patterns, forms and colours associated with the building, including the striking form of the Brise Soleil at the front of the court house. Combined with structural planting, including a line of Hornbeam to the front of the Court House, the scheme creates a ‘sense of place’ and enhances links with the town centre whilst retaining a high level of functionality. The choice of materials and street furniture works sinuously with the new courthouse and clearly expresses the graduation from public to private areas within the scheme.

The Loughborough Magistrates Court project was highly commended within the New Build category of the Charnwood Borough Design Awards for its contemporary architecture and use of materials within the design to BREEAM excellent standard. The Magistrates Court was also highly commended within the new Townscape category by the council, receiving the ultimate recognition within this category as “A dramatic architectural and landscape addition to the Loughborough townscape. Designed to front the proposed inner relief road, the development confidently sets the scene for the new route.”

The panel of judges included representatives from Charnwood Borough Council, the Loughborough & District Civic Trust, RIBA and the Landscape Institute.
